Learnings at Kreate Architecture & Design Ltd
My journey
When I first joined Kreate Architecture & Design Ltd., I was transitioning from a different architectural background into the Canadian architectural profession. Over the past year, I’ve embraced this opportunity to grow and learn, evolving into a confident professional. My work has spanned various projects, including schools, colleges, hospitals, senior housing, retail, and offices. While I am unable to share specific project details due to confidentiality agreements, I am eager to highlight the skills and experience I have gained during this time.
Key Learning Outcomes
Key Learning Outcomes
-
Understanding Canadian Architectural Standards
At the start, I encountered challenges in understanding the unique aspects of Canadian architectural practice, particularly the regulatory standards. To overcome this, I engaged in self-learning and on-the-job training, familiarizing myself with local zoning, municipality requirements, and NBC Part 3 codes for fire safety and accessibility. I developed the ability to ensure that all projects adhere to these standards, contributing to the creation of compliant and safe structures.

-
Precision in Documentation
Although I was proficient in industry-standard software, I initially lacked an understanding of Canadian standards for creating permits and construction documentation. Over the past year, through seeking continuous assistance and feedback from colleagues and my manager, I have learned to produce accurate and detailed construction documentation that meets Canadian standards, ensuring clarity and precision in design communication.

Adapting & Growth to Canadian Architecture - Understanding Construction
Learning about Canadian architecture is an ongoing process. While I’ve gained insight into the breadth and depth of the field, I am committed to continuous learning. Beyond the projects I’ve worked on, I am also learning the construction process detailing and methodology through resources like the Canadian Handbook of Practice and CMHC’s Handbook of Canadian Wooden Construction. I’ve also taken every opportunity to visit sites and gain hands-on experience, learning about the challenges that can arise during construction and how to mitigate them.

-
Cultural Understanding
I am also in the process of understanding the Canadian workplace culture. I collaborate closely with my teammates, actively seek feedback from experienced colleagues, and contribute to collective project success. This cultural adaptation is an integral part of my professional growth.

This experience has broadened my technical knowledge and highlighted areas where I can continue to improve. It has also deepened my appreciation for the role of architects in shaping Canadian communities.

Though I am still on the path to mastering all aspects of the field, my dedication to continuous learning and growth equips me to tackle new challenges and contribute meaningfully to the Canadian architectural industry.
